Seacoast Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group

The Seacoast Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group was begun in February of this year in response to a need in the community. Before the start of this program, there were no support groups in the seacoast area specifically for pregnancy/infant loss. A previous group had met at Exeter Hospital, but closed because of low attendance.

The Seacoast Pregnancy and Infant Loss Task Force, developed by Wentworth Douglass Hospital, was formed to address this need. The task force is headed by Nora C. Fortin, RNC, of WDH, who, with members Patty Flaherty, RN, of Exeter Hospital, and Sargent Dillion, RN, of Frisbie Memorial Hospital, developed the curriculum for the group. The support group began meeting at WDH this winter and spring and will travel to Exeter Hospital in the summer and Frisbie in the fall.

The goal of the SP&IL Task Force is to provide bereavement support for the families in our communities who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or newborn. Along with the support group, there is continuing education and an annual memorial service held at WDH in October.

Updates:

NHAWHONN member Cathy Hazelton, RN, director of Maternal-Child Health at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, has joined the group.

The October memorial service was scheduled for Saturday, the 6th, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, and the RTS Training Course at WDH in September was well-received by 60 participants.

The task force has a meeting scheduled for 10/31 to plan for 2008 education and support groups. If staff members have any suggestions/requests, they can contact their hospital representative prior to the meeting.
